Africa’s Time Is Now: Reclaiming Our Image, Redefining Our Future

Reclaiming Our Image, Redefining Our Future: Kitsi Desmond

At the heart of Africa’s future and innovation lies a powerful, urgent need to rebrand the African identity in the hearts and minds of Africans, especially our youth and children.

For far too long, Africa has carried the burden of a narrative that was not authored by us. We’ve inherited perspectives shaped by others, and as a result, many of us are growing up disconnected from the very greatness we come from.

Imagine this: You don’t truly learn to drive until the car is in motion. That’s when you learn to control, to navigate, to avoid mistakes, and ultimately, to move forward confidently.

Africa is in motion

But our journey is hindered by an identity crisis, one deepened by the unfiltered infiltration of foreign cultures and technologies. We consume more than we create. We admire more than we innovate. And sadly, we are fed just enough to be comfortable, not hungry enough to build.

This must change

If Africa is to rise, we must reimagine ourselves not just as consumers of technology, but as creators. Not just as observers of innovation, but as owners of it.

We must teach the world how we do things, from our perspective, rooted in our values, inspired by our rich culture, and driven by our genius. Africa must be seen and celebrated as

  • An innovation hub
  • A treasure trove of resources
  • A global player in the knowledge economy

But it starts with us.
With what we speak.
With how we think.
With what we amplify

The stories we tell become the beliefs we live by.

We need a rebranded Africa, where we shine a spotlight on what we are doing right, what we have achieved, and how we are shaping global conversations through technology, science, entrepreneurship, and the arts.

If you’re reading this, know this: You are Africa’s hope.
You are not waiting for a savior.
You are the savior.

Let’s stop waiting for permission. Let’s start building. Let’s make our Africa the Africa the world cannot ignore.
